Partnering for Lasting Freedom: RGV Road to Recovery® & Freedom That Lasts®

Freedom That Lasts® is a Christ-centered program designed to equip churches and ministries to guide individuals toward freedom from addiction through biblical principles. At RGV Road to Recovery®, we are thrilled to partner with Freedom That Lasts® to provide a structured, faith-based approach that addresses not just sobriety but spiritual transformation. Together, we offer an environment where true healing happens—rooted in the Gospel and supported by a welcoming community. This partnership amplifies our mission to bring hope and lasting change to those in need.

Starting an addiction ministry is no small task. Following the guidance of Luke 14:28, the journey begins with prayer, seeking God’s will in the battle against addiction. With church support, both in leadership and among the congregation, and by aligning with Freedom That Lasts®‘ philosophy of addiction, we can create a powerful, transformative ministry.

What an FTL Chapter Looks Like

Each Freedom That Lasts® chapter meeting involves several key elements, all designed to encourage spiritual growth and recovery:

1. Testimony Time (10-20 min)

Participants are invited to share how God is working in their lives. Though not mandatory, many find encouragement in sharing their stories of progress and change.

2. Care Group (25-30 min):

Participants meet in small groups to discuss their journey through the FTL curriculum. Whether it’s memorizing Scripture, journaling, or completing written assignments, students share their work and celebrate achievements, earning rewards like ribbons and FreedomBucks for their efforts.

3. Teaching Time (25-30 min):

This is a time of biblical teaching focused on challenging and equipping participants to continue growing in their walk with Christ.

4. Celebration (10-15 min):

The meeting concludes with a celebration of milestones. Ribbons and pins are awarded for progress, with applause and support from the group. For many, this might be the only celebration they receive, making it a vital part of the recovery process.

5. Fellowship (Optional) (25-45 min)

A fellowship meal is often shared at the end of the night. This time allows participants, church members, and volunteers to connect on a deeper level, laugh, pray, and build relationships that extend beyond the weekly meeting.

A Proven Three-Pronged Approach to Lasting Freedom

Freedom That Lasts® provides training, resources, and a proven three-pronged approach that focuses on building a welcoming community, sharing the Gospel, and providing biblical counseling.

1. Welcoming Community

Freedom That Lasts® helps churches create environments where individuals feel accepted, forming genuine relationships. By integrating participants into church life, they break free from the isolation and fear often associated with leaving their past communities. This welcoming atmosphere fosters trust and celebrates milestones in recovery, making participants feel valued and supported.

2. Sharing the Gospel

The heart of Freedom That Lasts® is the Gospel. True freedom from addiction comes through faith in Jesus Christ. Beyond just inviting individuals to meetings, the program leads participants to spiritual transformation by hearing, believing, and trusting the Gospel. The goal is not merely attendance but full integration into the family of God, resulting in lasting spiritual adoption.

3. Biblical Counseling

Biblical counseling forms the backbone of Freedom That Lasts®. Drawing on 2 Peter 1:3, the program teaches that Scripture alone contains the answers to life’s struggles, including addiction. While sobriety is important, the ultimate goal is Christlikeness. Freedom That Lasts uses biblical truth to address the root causes of addiction, aiming for heart transformation that glorifies God. This counseling goes beyond sobriety, helping participants live lives of purpose and spiritual renewal.

WHAT OTHERS ARE SAYING

FTL has become an increasingly important part of our local church ministry. Any church today that is reaching the lost with the gospel must find a way to help those who are dealing with addictions and life-dominating sins. There is nothing magical about FTL. It is a discipleship ministry specifically designed for people who desperately need to find Jesus Christ and grow in Him.

We have also found that FTL is a great tool, not only for people dealing with addictions, but also for people facing other significant life issues. It provides a deeper, more accountable form of discipleship than is found in other typical church ministries. Fulfilling the Great Commission in today’s culture demands a ministry like this.
Kevin Schaal
Pastor Northwest Valley Baptist Church
As a cocaine addict and an alcoholic for years, I was on a path of no return. Years before, I attended AA, but the “higher power” mentality was not for me. Even then, I knew the truth of God’s Word.

12 years ago, Christ saved me, but I still battled my addictions. By God’s grace, the drug addiction faded very quickly. However, I still drank, and I kept failing over and over.

A friend invited me to Freedom That Lasts, and I learned that real victory and true freedom comes from walking with God and cooperating with Him to change who I was. I finally had hope that overcoming addiction was possible with God’s help. God used FTL to rescue me and continues using it to change my life.
