We often believe that to come to God, we need to bring Him our successes. We think He wants our unbroken streaks, our perfectly managed lives, and our impressive achievements. But the truth of recovery is exactly the opposite. God isn’t looking for our polished trophies; He is looking for our broken pieces.
Admitting our absolute powerlessness is the greatest sacrifice we can make. It is the sacrifice of our pride. When we come to the end of ourselves and realize that our own strength has completely failed us, we finally develop a “broken and contrite heart.” A contrite heart is one that has stopped making excuses. It has stopped blaming others. It simply says, “I am broken, and I need help.”
The beautiful promise in this verse is that God will never despise or turn away a heart in this condition. While the world might reject us for our failures, God welcomes us because of them. Our brokenness is not a disqualification from His grace; it is the very prerequisite for it. A humble heart is never turned away.
