When we receive a gift, we usually think it belongs to us. We think, “This is mine to keep.” But in the spiritual life, gifts are given to us, but they are for others. We are not meant to be reservoirs that hoard the water; we are meant to be pipes that let it flow through to the thirsty.
This is the heartbeat of carrying the message. Having had a spiritual awakening, we try to share it. We become stewards of the grace we found. We don’t hoard our recovery; we share it. If you have found hope, you are now a carrier of hope. If you have found forgiveness, you are a carrier of forgiveness.
Our humility acts as the foundation of this service. It reminds us that the messenger isn’t the point; the message is. When we serve others without needing credit or applause, we are acting as faithful stewards. We are simply passing the bread from one beggar to another.
