As children, we played hide and seek. The goal was to stay hidden as long as possible, holding our breath in a closet or behind a bush. Many of us brought that same mindset into our spiritual lives. We spent years hiding from God, afraid that if He found us, we would be in trouble. We hid our habits, our resentments, and our fears in the dark corners of our souls, hoping no one would notice.
But our recovery journey invites us to stop hiding and start seeking. It calls us to improve our conscious contact with God through prayer and meditation. Notice the promise in the scripture: You will find Him. He isn’t hiding from you. He is waiting to be found.
We don’t seek God because we are forced to or because we are trying to avoid punishment; we seek Him because we are attracted to the peace, sanity, and love He offers. When we seek Him with “all our heart” not just a half-hearted glance while we scroll through our phones we find the connection we have been starving for. You don’t have to hide your mess from Him; He is the only one who can clean it up.
