“Therefore, as God’s chosen people… clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.” — Colossians 3:12

Every morning we decide what clothes to put on. We wouldn’t wear a tuxedo to dig a ditch, and we wouldn’t wear muddy boots to a wedding. We also decide what attitude to wear. For a long time, we wore resentment, impatience, and selfishness. They were our uniform. They protected us, but they also isolated us.
Now, as we prepare to be willing to make amends, we need a wardrobe change. We cannot repair relationships while wearing the armor of anger. We have to put on compassion. We have to strap on humility. We have to zip up patience.
This isn’t a uniform for a job; it’s the clothing of the heart. When we approach the people we harmed, and we are dressed in gentleness and patience instead of defensiveness, it changes the atmosphere. We show them that we really have changed, not just in our words, but in our character.

Pick one “garment” from the verse (compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, patience) to wear all day today. If you take it off in a moment of frustration, pause, apologize, and put it back on.

Father, clothe me with compassion and willingness today. Let people see Your character when they look at me. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
