When we drive, we check our blind spots before we change lanes because we know that what we can’t see can destroy us. In life, we have spiritual blind spots, too. We can see everyone else’s flaws clearly we know exactly what our spouse or boss needs to fix! But we often miss our own arrogance, selfishness, or resentment.
This is why a searching and fearless moral inventory is essential. We cannot fix what we will not face. We ask God to turn on the high beams and show us the “hidden faults” we have ignored or justified for years.
We do this with care and focus. We don’t take inventory of our neighbor. We focus on our own side of the street. Honest discovery isn’t about shaming yourself or beating yourself up; it’s about asking God to help you see reality so you don’t keep crashing into the same obstacles over and over again.
