Change is hard. Even when our old lives were making us miserable, they were at least familiar. Letting go of our defects of character feels like losing an old, toxic friend. We are often scared to see who we will be without our anger, our coping mechanisms, or our pride.
This is why readiness is so critical. God is a gentleman; He will not force transformation upon you. He waits for you to become entirely ready to have Him remove your defects. The key words in this scripture are willing and obedient.
Willingness is an attitude of the heart; obedience is the action of the hands. When we align our desire to change with the daily actions of recovery, the promise is beautiful: we get to “eat the good things of the land.” Readiness opens the way to the abundant life we have been starving for.
