Fear is a constant companion in addiction. We fear being found out, we fear running out, and we fear falling apart. Even in recovery, we often fear that we aren’t strong enough to stay sober, that we will mess this up just like we messed up everything else.
That is why we start by admitting we are powerless. It sounds scary to admit weakness, but look at the promise in this verse: because we are weak, God promises to uphold us. You don’t have to white-knuckle your way through life anymore, trying to hold your whole world together with your own shaking hands. You are being held by a righteous right hand that never slips.
We are reminded that we are all being upheld together. When you feel your knees shaking, look around at your group or your friends. You are surrounded by others who are also being sustained by God’s grace. You are safe, not because of your grip on God, but because of His grip on you.
