If the engine block of a car is cracked in half, it doesn’t matter how many times you change the oil, polish the exterior, or put premium gas in the tank. The car is still dead. To make the car run again, you don’t need a minor repair; you need a mechanic to drop a brand new, working engine under the hood. In our addiction, our hearts often became like stone—cold, hard, and defensive. We stopped feeling and we stopped hoping. God knows that behavior modification is like polishing the exterior of a broken car. He doesn’t just want to “patch up” our old, stony hearts; He promises to give us an entirely new one. Readiness invites this transformation. When we become entirely ready to let go of our old defenses, God performs a spiritual transplant. He drops a “heart of flesh” inside of us—a heart that can feel again, love again, and respond to His leading. |
