In our past lives, things were incredibly complicated. We had to remember who we told what lie to, how to manipulate the next situation to get what we wanted, and how to keep all our spinning plates from crashing down around us. Addiction makes life a tangled, exhausting web of chaos and drama.
When we enter recovery, we often overcomplicate our spirituality, too. We think we need to master deep theology or perform perfectly to make God happy. But God’s requirements for us are beautifully, blessedly simple. He breaks it down into three daily goals: Act justly (do the right thing, even when it’s hard), love mercy (give others the grace and forgiveness you so desperately need yourself), and walk humbly (remember that you are not in charge of the universe).
Walking humbly is the foundation that holds the other two together. It means aligning our pace with God’s pace. We don’t run miles ahead of Him in anxiety about the future, and we don’t lag behind Him in stubbornness about the past. We just walk beside Him, one single day at a time, trusting that He knows the way through the woods better than we do.
