When we break something valuable—like an expensive vase or a piece of technology—our instinct is usually to throw it away or sweep the pieces under the rug in embarrassment. Because of this human tendency, we often project that same attitude onto God. We assume that when we relapse, fail, or make a massive mess of our lives, God turns His back on us and walks away in disgust. We think He only wants to be near us when our lives are put together.
But the nature of God is the exact opposite of our fears. He is a first responder. He doesn’t run away from our brokenness; He runs directly toward the emergency. The scripture tells us He is close to the brokenhearted.
Your crushed spirit is not a repellant to God; it is a magnet for His grace. When you have exhausted all your own strength, when your pride is shattered, and you have nothing left to offer but the broken pieces of your life, you are finally in the perfect posture to be saved. He meets us exactly where we are, not where we pretend to be.
