When we are struggling, feeling triggered, or having a bad day, our natural instinct is to turn inward. We isolate ourselves. We obsess over our pain, our unfair circumstances, our cravings, and the ways we have been wronged. This looping track of self-centeredness and self-pity is the absolute breeding ground for resentment and, ultimately, relapse.
The quickest, most effective way out of our own heads is to serve someone else. Jesus, the King of the universe, knelt down in the dirt to wash the grimy feet of His friends. He showed us that true greatness, and true freedom, are found in humble, hands-on service.
When we give our time, energy, and empathy to help another person, our own burdens miraculously feel lighter. Service shifts our perspective. It reminds us that despite our messy pasts, we have something deeply valuable to offer the world. We are no longer just survivors trying to get by; we are active instruments of hope. Serving others multiplies the hope inside of us and starves our self-pity.
