For many of us, the trauma of life, the betrayals we suffered, and the numbing effects of our addiction slowly turned our hearts to stone. We didn’t do it on purpose; we built those walls to keep the pain out. But in doing so, we inadvertently kept all the joy, love, and connection out as well. We survived, but we were emotionally dead inside.
God’s promise is a miraculous spiritual surgery. He doesn’t ask us to grab a chisel and desperately try to chip away at our own stony hearts. He promises to remove the stone entirely and replace it with something soft, living, and responsive.
To receive this transplant, we simply have to be ready. We have to be willing to feel again, even when feeling is deeply uncomfortable. We have to stop defending the stone walls and invite the Divine Surgeon to do His work. It is a vulnerable process, but readiness invites the total transformation that our own willpower could never achieve.
