If you take a glass jar and fill it to the brim with sand, and then try to shove several large rocks inside, they won’t fit. But if you put the large rocks in the jar first, you can easily pour the sand over them, and it will perfectly fill in all the empty spaces around the rocks. Addiction is a disorder of priorities; we constantly tried to fill our lives with the “sand” of temporary fixes, money, and selfish desires, leaving absolutely no room for the big, important rocks of faith, family, and health. Recovery is the daily process of dumping out the jar and putting the big rocks in first. Surrender reorders life in a way that actually works. When we stop obsessing over our immediate demands and start seeking God’s kingdom first, we find that the “sand”—our daily needs, peace, and relationships—naturally falls into its proper place. |
