Anxiety is a crushing weight. Physically, it makes our chests tight and our stomachs churn. Spiritually, it is often a sign that we are trying to carry the weight of the world on our own shoulders again. We worry because, deep down, we believe the outcome of our lives depends entirely on our own ability to control our circumstances. But control is an illusion, and trying to maintain it will only drive us to the brink of insanity.
God offers us a beautiful, supernatural exchange: we give Him our anxieties through prayer, and He gives us His peace to guard our minds. Notice that gratitude is the bridge between the two. When we bring our requests with thanksgiving, we shift our brain’s focus. We remind our anxious minds of all the times God has already come through for us in the past, which builds our faith for the future.
This peace doesn’t mean our problems vanish instantly or that bills magically pay themselves. It means that our hearts and minds are “guarded”—a military term meaning protected by a garrison by a supernatural calm even while the storm is still raging around us. You don’t have to figure it all out today; you just have to hand it over.
