We spend so much of our lives trying to avoid being broken. We put on a brave face, we hide our struggles, and we exhaust ourselves pretending that everything is fine. In our active addiction, we built thick walls to protect our fragile egos, believing that if anyone saw our true, broken state, they would run away. We often project this same expectation onto God.
But this verse shatters that assumption. God does not pull away from our brokenness; He leans into it. Admitting that we are completely powerless over our destructive habits is not a shameful defeat. It is the very moment our walls finally crumble, allowing God to get close. Our crushed spirits do not disqualify us from His love; they are the exact conditions that invite His saving grace.
The most profound spiritual breakthroughs do not happen when we are standing proudly on the mountaintop of success. They happen when we are on our knees, finally admitting we cannot do it alone. When you stop trying to hold all the pieces together, you allow Him to start the beautiful work of healing. Admitting your need is what opens the door to His nearness.
