When a small child is learning to ride a bicycle without training wheels for the first time, they are terrified. They feel wobbly, weak, and certain they are going to crash. But their fear subsides when they feel their parent’s strong hand gripping the back of the seat, running right alongside them and holding them up. The child doesn’t have to be strong enough to balance perfectly; they just have to trust the hand holding them. Fear is a constant companion in recovery. We fear the future, we fear our own cravings, and we fear that we are simply too weak to make it. But the promise of God is that we don’t have to be strong enough on our own. God meets us exactly where we are—in our wobble, our fear, and our weakness. He is a Power greater than ourselves who steps in to hold the seat. You don’t have to rely on your own flimsy willpower today; you just have to lean into the hand that is holding you. |
