In nature, there is a stark difference between a river and a swamp. A river receives water from the mountains and constantly flows outward, keeping it fresh, clear, and full of life. A swamp, however, only takes water in. Because it has no outlet, the water becomes stagnant, toxic, and dead. In our addiction, we were like the swamp. We were black holes of need, consuming the time, money, and emotional energy of everyone around us without ever giving back. Recovery is the miracle that turns the swamp back into a river. Jesus showed us that true life is found in flowing outward through service. When we take our eyes off our own problems and focus on helping someone else, our own burdens feel lighter. Your past struggles are the exact tools that allow you to help someone else. Serving others keeps your recovery fresh, alive, and moving forward. |
