When you are hiking on a dangerous, narrow mountain trail, you don’t spend your time staring at the clouds or looking backward at the path you’ve already walked. You keep your eyes firmly fixed on where you are placing your feet right now. One distracted step can lead to a disastrous fall. Our recovery journey requires the exact same level of thoughtful steadiness. We don’t stay sober by accident. We stay free by giving careful thought to our daily choices. This is the power of a continued personal inventory. We must regularly pause and evaluate our attitudes, our motives, and our reactions. When we step out of line when we snap in anger, lie to save face, or act selfishly—we must admit it promptly. We don’t wait for a small mistake to snowball into a massive resentment. Daily honesty keeps our footing secure and our path steadfast. |
