Think of a tightrope walker stepping carefully across a high cable. They don't look miles ahead or glance backward at where they started; their focus is entirely on the exact position of their feet in the present moment. A single moment of carelessness or distraction can cause a sudden, dangerous fall. To stay upright, they constantly make subtle, instantaneous adjustments to keep their balance. In recovery, continuing to take personal inventory and promptly admitting when we are wrong is our daily balance check. It keeps us from drifting back into old, destructive patterns by calling us to take a regular, honest inventory of our daily thoughts, words, and actions. When we spot a misstep a flash of anger, a dishonest word, or a spike of pride—we don't ignore it or pretend it didn't happen. We promptly admit it and adjust our footing. By keeping short accounts with God and others every day, we maintain our spiritual equilibrium and walk steadfastly forward. |
