In our addiction, our priorities were entirely backwards. The substance or the behavior sat on the throne of our lives. We sought the high, the relief, or the escape first, and absolutely everything else; our families, our careers, our finances, our dignity was sacrificed on that altar. We were chasing things that promised life but only left us emptier and more broken.
Recovery is the daily process of re-ordering our lives. It is taking the idol off the throne of our hearts and giving that seat back to the rightful King. When we seek His kingdom first, we stop obsessing over the temporary fixes that used to control us.
When God is in the first place, the profound promise is that all the other “things” peace, provision, healthy relationships, and sanity begin to fall into their proper places.
Surrender isn’t about losing your life or giving up everything fun; it is about putting your life in the right, functional order so you can finally enjoy it the way it was meant to be lived.
