Here and now I give half of my possessions to the poor, and if I have cheated anybody out of anything, I will pay back four times the amount.’” — Luke 19:8 | | Imagine a reckless driver plowing through a neighbor’s manicured front garden, crushing their prize-winning rosebushes and snapping their wooden fence. If the driver merely texts the neighbor saying, “My bad! Hope we are cool,” and drives off, no real healing occurs. Genuine remorse requires pulling over, buying new rosebushes, grabbing a shovel, and getting your hands dirty in the soil to restore what was destroyed. In our past, we often offered cheap, fluid words of apology just to escape consequences or relieve our immediate guilt. Making direct amends wherever possible turns our words into tangible action. Sincerity is not measured by how emotional we get when we apologize; it is proven through restitution. When we systematically go to those we have harmed to repair the damage—restoring stolen money, broken promises, or lost trust—we clear away the lingering debris of our past and construct a firm foundation for peace. |
