Human beings love to be in control. Our “own understanding” tells us that we know what is best for us, when we need it, and how to get it. The problem is that leaning on our own understanding is exactly what drove our lives into the ditch in the first place. We are terrible navigators of our own destiny.
Recovery requires a radical shift in management. It requires us to stop leaning on our flawed logic and start trusting the Creator. Submission is a word that makes us flinch, but in the spiritual life, submission simply means trusting God enough to let Him drive. It is a daily decision to turn our will and our lives over to His care.
When we finally stop wrestling with God for control of the steering wheel and submit to His direction, the promise is beautiful: He makes our paths straight. He removes the chaotic detours and leads us toward true freedom. Surrender is not a loss of freedom; it is the only way to find a clear path.
