When a massive wildfire burns through a forest, the firefighters don’t stand around trying to control the wind or the weather; they only focus on clearing a firebreak on the ground directly in front of them. In the wreckage of our past relationships, we constantly tried to control the “weather”—how other people reacted, what they said, and if they forgave us. This verse offers a profound and incredibly liberating boundary: “as far as it depends on you”. You are not responsible for how the other person reacts. You cannot control the weather of their emotions. You are only responsible for clearing your side of the street. Pursuing peace means we lay down our defenses, admit our wrongs sincerely, and make an earnest effort to repair the damage. Real willingness to seek reconciliation, regardless of the outcome, is what ultimately puts the fire out in our own souls. |
