The burden of carrying unconfessed wrongs is absolutely crushing. We spend an immense amount of physical and emotional energy trying to keep up appearances, managing lies, and burying our guilt. We walk around carrying a heavy backpack filled with the rocks of our hidden mistakes, and the longer we hide them, the heavier they become. Confession is the key that unlocks the door to these self-made prisons. When we finally speak the exact nature of our wrongs out loud, we open the windows of a dark, stuffy room and let the fresh air blow through. We agree with God about our condition, dropping the exhausting charade of perfection. Notice the magnificent double promise in this verse. When we confess, we find that God is faithful and just. He doesn’t just forgive us, which means canceling the debt. He actually purifies us. We are wiped clean from all unrighteousness, allowing us to step into true, unburdened freedom. |
