If you only repaint the living room walls while completely ignoring the sagging roof and the hidden mold growing behind the bathroom tiles, the house will eventually crumble around you. A quick, cosmetic touch-up might look impressive to passersby, but true structural safety requires taking a flashlight into the dark, dusty corners and uncovering what needs real repair. In recovery, taking a searching and fearless moral inventory is like taking that flashlight into the hidden rooms of our character. We often fail to discern our own blind spots, mistaking self-pity for sadness or manipulation for protection. But when we invite God to shine His light on our hidden errors and motives, we aren’t looking to condemn ourselves. Honest self-review exposes the structural damage so that God’s forgiving love can rebuild us on a firm, healthy foundation. |
