Recovery gives us freedom. We are no longer slaves to our addiction. We aren’t chained to the bottle, the drug, or the behavior anymore. But what is that freedom for? Is it just so we can do whatever we want? Is it so we can be selfish? No, we are set free so that we can serve. Carrying the message is the culmination of this journey. We serve humbly. We serve in love. We realize that the best way to keep our own house clean is to help someone else build theirs. Service isn’t a tax we pay on our sobriety; it is the joy of using our freedom for good. Our humility keeps us grounded. It reminds us that we are all equals. Service isn’t about power or looking good; it’s about love. When we use our new freedom to help someone else, we lock in our own sobriety and find a purpose that addiction never gave us. |
