When someone throws an insult, a criticism, or an injury at us, our instinct is to catch it and throw it right back harder. That is the game of “evil for evil.” It is a game of catch that never ends, and everyone ends up bruised. Making amends and living in recovery is about stopping the game. We drop the ball. Even if the other person was 90% wrong and we were only 10% wrong, we take care of our 10%. We do what is right, regardless of what they do. We refuse to let their bad behavior dictate our behavior. Our personal integrity supports unity in our homes and workplaces. By refusing to repay evil, we create space for healing. We show that we are no longer controlled by our reactions or our triggers. We are free to choose peace. |
