Our 12 Steps to Freedom From Addiction

“If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.”

John 8:36 (KJV) — Words of Jesus Christ

Our Biblical Recovery Pathway

Freedom, Restoration, and New Life

RGV Road to Recovery IA — Receive God’s Vision — presents these 12 Steps as a biblical pathway for individuals seeking freedom from addiction and destructive behaviors through Jesus Christ.

The steps encourage honest self-examination, repentance, acceptance of responsibility, forgiveness, appropriate amends, spiritual growth, and service to others. They emphasize both personal accountability and dependence upon God’s grace.

The purpose extends beyond abstinence. We seek lasting spiritual transformation, restored relationships, a renewed mind, and a life of faithful discipleship.

Sobriety is not the finish line. Recovery is the context. Discipleship is the destination. Jesus Christ is the foundation.

Admitting Our Need We admitted that addiction, destructive behaviors, and our attempts to control our lives had led us into bondage, and acknowledged our need for God’s grace, truth, and strength. Romans 7:18–19 (KJV) 18. For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh,) dwelleth no good thing: for to will is present with me; but how to perform that which is good I find not. 19. For the good that I would I do not: but the evil which I would not, that I do.Believing in Restoration Through Christ We came to believe that Jesus Christ, through His death and resurrection, offers forgiveness, salvation, hope, and the power to begin a new life. John 8:36 (KJV) If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed. 2 Corinthians 5:17 (KJV) Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.Surrendering to God’s Will We made a conscious decision to turn from self-directed living, repent of our sins, and surrender our lives and choices to God through Jesus Christ. Romans 12:1–2 (KJV) 1. I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. 2. And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.
Examining Our Lives Honestly We made a searching and fearless moral and spiritual inventory, identifying harmful behaviors, sinful attitudes, resentments, fears, and patterns requiring change. Lamentations 3:40 (KJV) Let us search and try our ways, and turn again to the LORD.Confessing and Accepting Responsibility We admitted our wrongs to God, ourselves, and an appropriate trusted person, accepting responsibility without excuses, blame, or condemnation. James 5:16 (KJV) Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much. 1 John 1:9 (KJV) If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.Becoming Willing to Be Transformed We became entirely willing for God to renew our hearts and minds, replace destructive habits with godly character, and teach us a new way of living. Ezekiel 36:26 (KJV) A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh. Ephesians 4:22–24 (KJV) 22. That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts; 23. And be renewed in the spirit of your mind; 24. And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness.
Humbly Seeking God’s Help We humbly asked God to forgive our sins, correct our shortcomings, strengthen our obedience, and guide our daily choices through the Holy Spirit. Psalm 51:10–17 (KJV) 10. Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me. 11. Cast me not away from thy presence; and take not thy holy spirit from me. 12. Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation; and uphold me with thy free spirit. 13. Then will I teach transgressors thy ways; and sinners shall be converted unto thee. 14. Deliver me from bloodguiltiness, O God, thou God of my salvation: and my tongue shall sing aloud of thy righteousness. 15. O Lord, open thou my lips; and my mouth shall shew forth thy praise. 16. For thou desirest not sacrifice; else would I give it: thou delightest not in burnt offering. 17. The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise.Identifying Those We Have Harmed We made a careful list of those harmed by our actions and became willing to pursue forgiveness, restitution, and reconciliation wherever appropriate. Matthew 5:23–24 (KJV) 23. Therefore if thou bring thy gift to the altar, and there rememberest that thy brother hath ought against thee; 24. Leave there thy gift before the altar, and go thy way; first be reconciled to thy brother, and then come and offer thy gift.Making Responsible Amends We made direct amends wherever reasonably possible, except when doing so would cause further harm, violate safety, or disregard appropriate boundaries. Romans 12:18 (KJV) If it be possible, as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men. Ephesians 4:32 (KJV) And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ’s sake hath forgiven you.
Practicing Daily Accountability We continued examining our thoughts, decisions, attitudes, and behaviors, promptly acknowledging wrongdoing and taking corrective action. Psalm 139:23–24 (KJV) 23. Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts: 24. And see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.Growing Through Prayer and Scripture We sought a deeper relationship with God through prayer, Bible study, worship, obedience, and fellowship, asking for wisdom to recognize and follow His will. Matthew 6:33 (KJV) But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you. 1 Thessalonians 5:17 (KJV) Pray without ceasing.Living as Disciples and Serving Others Having experienced God’s grace and transforming work, we committed to sharing the Gospel, encouraging others in recovery, practicing these principles daily, and serving as faithful disciples of Jesus Christ. Matthew 28:19–20 (KJV) 19. Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: 20. Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen. Galatians 6:2 (KJV) Bear ye one another’s burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ.

A Lifelong Commitment to Freedom and Growth

These 12 Steps are not simply a checklist to complete. They are biblical principles to practice through daily surrender, honesty, accountability, prayer, fellowship, responsible decisions, and service to others.

Progress may involve setbacks, difficult conversations, professional support, and continued learning. Our aim is to encourage perseverance, spiritual maturity, restored relationships, and a life increasingly shaped by the teachings of Jesus Christ.

Recovery is a journey. God’s grace offers hope. Discipleship gives our journey lasting purpose.
